Health Status and Issues
L.A. County residents have enjoyed overall health status improvements in the last 10 years. However, significant geographic and ethnic disparities persist. For instance, there are differences in self-reported health status, an important predictor of life expectancy and health care utilization. SPA 4 (Metro), SPA 6 (South L.A.) and SPA 7 (East L.A.) fared the worst compared to other areas. Chronic conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease have been on the rise. In particular, alarming health disparities exist for South L.A. residents.
