County residents have enjoyed overall health status improvements in the last 10 years. However, significant geographic and ethnic disparities persist. For instance, there are differences in self-reported health status, an important predictor of life expectancy and health care utilization. SPA 4 (Metro), SPA 6 (South L.A.) and SPA 7 (East L.A.) fared the worst compared to other areas. Chronic conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease have been on the rise.
