Public Health Insurance Coverage Programs

The uninsured are caught between shrinking markets for employment-based coverage and limited public coverage. While Medi-Cal covers nearly one-quarter of all county residents, the huge majority of uninsured Angelenos are not eligible. Fortunately, there are more coverage options. In June 2004, the Children’s Health Initiative of Greater Los Angeles launched the county’s Healthy Kids health insurance program. Overwhelmingly successful in its first year, the Initiative has enrolled over 44,000 children in Healthy Kids, as well as 100,000 in Medi-Cal and Healthy Families. Starting in September 2007, L.A. County Department of Health Services will launch a program to provide coverage to low-income, uninsured adults, Healthy Way LA (HWLA), about which the Coverage Initiative section contains more information.
