Children's Health and Coverage

Health care coverage options for children have increased since June 2004, when the Children's Health Initiative of Greater Los Angeles launched the county's Healthy Kids health insurance program. Overwhelmingly successful in its first year, the Initiative has enrolled over 44,000 children in Healthy Kids, as well as 100,000 in Medi-Cal and Healthy Families. Other counties throughout California have started similar programs, with efforts taking place to ensure this is a permanent program through state legislation. The Children's Planning Council, First 5 LA and the Commission for Children, Youth and Their Families are organizations that have played a key role in health care and coverage of children in the city and county.
