Registered nurses (RNs) comprise the largest group of health care providers in the VA’s health care system, but VA medical centers (VAMC) face RN recruitment and retention challenges. In this GAO report, systems for handling patient data as well as hiring and scheduling processes were amongst the issues reviewed. GAO recommends that VAMCs improve their patient classification system (PCS) to more accurately report patient needs and therefore, staffing needs; make changes to expedite the recruitment and hiring process of RNS; and offer more flexible work schedules.
